Make Your Stag Party a Success with Clay Shooting

By Samantha Richards

Does hearing the word 12 bore makes you wonder what it is, or do you get confused upon hearing words like mini target and Battue; then most likely you are not aware of the exciting game of clay pigeon shooting. This famous sport used to mainly target live preys (pigeons) but when they started becoming extinct, the targets were switched from pigeons to artificial clay targets. Now birds are not harmed in this game at all and instead artificial targets are utilized. Clay pigeon shooting is famous with stag parties as men can compete with each other in this game.

Another name for clay pigeon is "inanimate bird shooting" which did not gain popularity as much as the word clay pigeon shooting did. The terminology remains almost the same from the olden days when live pigeons were used. Nowadays clay target is usually called as a "bird" and if it's been hit then it's called a "kill".

In clay pigeon shooting you are given safety gears to protect you from any unfortunate accident. You get ear protectors and mask for your eyes. In this game you hold the loaded gun against your shoulder and elevate it to forty five degree towards the sky. A machine called the trap, fires clay targets into the air for you to shoot at them.

In different games of clay pigeon shooting, different sized targets are used and sometimes trap throws two targets at a time in the air to test the speed and skill of hitting both the targets. Usually targets are standard targets which upon being thrown out of trap form an expected arc but some targets like Battue are utilized which fly out of trap with lot of speed. When Battue is hit it drops suddenly to imitate a duck landing.

In clay shooting shotgun with a maximum bore of 12 is utilized that means a diameter of 0.729 inches and it usually called by people as "12 bore shotgun". To hit the target, cartridges are used as ammunition; you get a quota of cartridges in this game. However if you want you can re-fill your quota whenever you like.

If it's your first time holding a shotgun and have never fired anything before then you should get ready to feel a kick upon pulling the trigger to shoot the target. It is imperative that you hold the gun tightly against your shoulder and tuck it into your shoulder so that the impact of the shot is minimized. Ensure that you don't stumble backwards or injure yourself.

Clay pigeon shooting on a stag party is often a great success and enjoyed by all. Whilst people are shooting, it gives a chance for the rest of the group to catch up and chat to one another and break the ice if people are meeting for the first time.
