Excessive Underarm Sweating - Day To Day Prevention Tips

By Kenneth L. Phipps

When dealing with excessive underarm sweating - day to day prevention can usually take care of this problem. The body perspires to maintain its temperature. Everyone is different, and some people sweat more than others. Implementing some easy preventative maintenance measures can help individuals feel more comfortable and confident.

Exercise, hot weather, and nervousness are some of the more common reasons people sweat. Sweat glands are activated by a chemical in the nervous system. Sometimes people suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis where they have an overabundance of this chemical or their sweat glands are hypersensitive to it. These people can secrete four to five times more perspiration than the average individual.

Excessive underarm sweating can be very embarrassing. It's uncomfortable and can ruin clothes. It is offensive to other people if it stinks. It could also indicate a serious medical problem.

Antiperspirants are the best line of defense for helping to keep a person dry. They work the best when they are used in the morning and at night before going to bed. Antiperspirants work by creating a plug that blocks the sweat pores in the skin. They have an active ingredient that can range from mild to very strong depending on the concentration. This active ingredient in higher doses can be irritating to the skin, so it is best to start out small and systematically increase the dose until one is found that works.

Antiperspirants are also more effective when they are used on completely dry skin. Try using a hair dryer to ensure total dryness. Gently massaging the antiperspirant into the area can also increase its effectiveness.

Armpit odors are actually produced by bacteria on the skin. These bacteria prosper in damp environments. They are not harmful, just smelly. Daily bathing helps keep the bacteria population down. Deodorants are antibacterial in nature, so they will control any residual bacteria. When the bacteria are gone, so is the odor.

When excessive sweating is caused by stress and anxiety, getting to the root of the emotional problem will help manage the physical problem. Learning stress management techniques, exercising, or seeking professional advice can be positive steps towards having more control and reducing stress.

There are many ways to deal with excessive underarm sweating - day to day prevention is a good place to start. This condition can be treated, and there are other options available through a medical professional.
