Gastric Bypass Tips for Eating Right While at Work

By Dawn Carleton

After you've undergone a gastric bypass procedure in Dallas, your doctor will issue specific guidelines to follow in the recovery process. These guidelines can include specific details to follow on anything from physical activity to alcohol consumption - but the most popular adjustments to make pertain to a gastric bypass diet. Though sometimes they are difficult to follow in the office or in a work setting, it's imperative to follow these dietary guidelines to reduce complications and get the most out of your bariatric surgery no matter when or where you are.

Diet Schedule

The diet won't be the same throughout the entire recovery process. According to mayoclinic.com, the dietary guidelines are usually split up into phases to make the transition back to solid foods a little easier. There are several phases, and the first phase is usually a liquid diet.

Eat Outside of Home

The phases range from a few days to a couple of weeks, and the constant changes can easily confuse a patient of gastric bypass, causing them to accidentally mix up their diet. In order to prevent this when you're away from the house, pack meals and take them with you and avoid depending on eating out or picking up food elsewhere. When in the pureed food phase of the diet, try packing a container with something like scrambled eggs or baby food. If you don't plan to take your food and want to grab food on the go, write down your doctor's suggestions and take them with you so you know what you can and cannot have.

Snacks

It's common in many workplaces to want a snack, but it can be particularly hard to find a snack that is friendly to your diet. In the puree phase, you might go for yogurt or fruit cocktail, or even applesauce or boiled veggies. You can save yourself some trouble by buying these snacks and keeping them in the fridge at the office or taking them in each day. This allows you to satisfy your urges between meals and helps you keep to your guidelines. Remember that you need to avoid eating too many snacks throughout the day because most recovering stomachs can only handle about a half-cup of food at any given time.

Asking for Additional Ideas

If everyone in the office normally orders takeout, platters or has parties where food is offered, it'll be difficult to stick to the diet food you brought to work and not indulge with your co-workers. Once you're back in your regular diet phase and want to start eating with others, ask your doctor or dietitian for food suggestions.

A basic gastric bypass diet includes less sugary foods and more foods rich in protein and nutrients, and you might be avoiding foods you didn't know you could eat after your gastric bypass surgery in Texas, like a lean cut of steak, if in the solid foods section of your diet. Don't make following your diet more difficult than it really is. Consult your doctor and take it one meal at a time and always remember to eat slowly.
