Developing Your Self-Esteem

By Yolanda Reyes

Self-esteem is all in the mind. It can make you happy and confident. It also can make you feel so bad about yourself. Self-esteem is like a battery. A charged battery makes the person positive while a battery low on energy makes the person negative.

People who have low self-esteem often don't succeed in life. They always think that they cannot do anything well enough even if they can. Self-belief is the foundation of self-esteem. Self-belief gives a person a big shot of confidence.

How do you develop self-belief? Don't confuse self-belief with self-importance. They are not the same thing. You won't succeed with self-importance.

You should have positive self-esteem. This means that you see yourself as good and capable as anyone else, no better or worse, you are proud of who you are, and you approach everything with a positive outlook.

To do this you must learn to accept yourself unconditionally. All people have their strengths, weaknesses, successes, and failures. These are part of who you are so accept it all. You should learn to be true to yourself.

Those who always languish are never happy. People who are always blaming everyone for their failures won't ever succeed. They are consumed with negativity.

Don't let yourself be consumed by your mistakes and failures. You have to accept your mistakes and move on. Your self-esteem diminishes every time you don't acknowledge your mistakes.

Accomplishments are a source of happiness for most people. So their self-esteem increases, making them feel like they can do anything. But self-esteem can drop when there are mistakes. It causes a person to feel unhappy and unwanted until he begins to feel so unsure of himself. There are also other aspects in life that can be affected.

In order to improve your self-esteem, you need to be fair to yourself. Do not beat yourself up when something goes wrong. It can lead to depression and overwhelming guilt. A mistake or failure cannot be changed, but it can be learned from. People should judge themselves fairly. Beating up on oneself leads to defeat, and destroys self-esteem.
