Aikido Power Based On One simple Physics Rule

By Al Case

Aikido Power, as anyone who has experienced it can attest, is an amazing thing. You will see it in ki power demonstrations, and, for that matter, any of the basic aikido throws. What surprises people is that the apparent complexity and majesty is all based on one, very simple, physics concept.

To better understand this aikido concept, one needs to examine the sayings of Aikido Founder Morihei Ueshiba. "If your (attacker) tries to pull you, let him pull. Don't resist (pull against him); pull in unison with him." An inspection of this simple aikido saying will demonstrate the truth and the secrets of this incredible Martial Art.

The universe, all every single particle of it, is made up of objects that move around. And, wherever there is motion, one look for what caused that movement. The source of all movement is the human being who started it.

The aikidoka stands still in the center of the universe, in the center of himself. An object (a body) moves in his direction. This is a particle of the universe, and he must not destroy it, but rather help it.

To hold one's position and endure the collision is to endure impact, is to create destruction. To give way before the force, to help the universe in its motions, that is creative. Do you consider God as a more creative force, or a destructive one?

In a perfectly balanced universe, he is a balance of both creation and destruction. In the world of humans there is incoming force (objects) and there is outgoing force (objects). Thus, the creativity of Nage, put in relation to the destructiveness of Uke, attains a perfectly balanced universe.

Thus, to do perfect Aikido, to achieve true Aikido Power, one need merely put aside his own willfullness and be willing to enter into a perfect balance with incoming force. In this way the Aikidoka will eventually be lead to discover the intent and geometry of the idea, of the person behind the attack. You must not push away, but be willing to accept, pull in accord with, accept the universe as it is, and then you will find the true martial art not just in physics, but in your spiritual nature. And this is the real idea behind O Sensei's advice.

Remember this in your Aikido practice: seek the truth of O Sensei's simple, but deep felt advices. Do not struggle with the universe, help it...with simple formula and a heart open to its contrivances. Do this and you will find the soul of Aikido; do this, use the one simple physics of learning to go with your opponent, to help him in his own struggles, and you will find the truth of Aikido Power is a simple truth.
