The Role Of Foil Embossing For Companies

By Mamie Conrad

Companies have certain graphic needs to improve their image. Foil embossing is a process that will help them answer these needs and allow them to maximize their marketing strategies. It makes use of dies on certain substrates to achieve 3D effects. The final outputs can then be used on various applications for the companies' own good.

In order to create a raised appearance on paper or any other substrates such as multi colored foils, two dies have to be used. These dies are called the recessed and relief dies. The recessed die is placed at the front part of the substrate during the embossing process in order to receive the pressure that the relief die exerts.

Depending on what effect you would like to achieve, you will have to choose from the different types of dies available. The types are identified according to the shape of the final output. These dies may be round edged, multi leveled, single leveled, beveled edged and sculptured. The multi level and the sculptured dies create more definition since their patterns and layers are more complicated.

When creating embossed surfaces, there are certain things that have to be considered. First would be the amount of pressure to be applied. The raising of the surface will depend so much on how much force the dies exert against each other. The amount of heat will also matter since this will allow for the best degree of impression.

You also need to decide on the depth of your dies. This is something you should consult with your artwork expert. The latter will be able to advise on the right die depth to be used to get the results that you want. Anyways, if the final output does not meet your requirements, you can always do retooling of the dies.

Dies can also be made from different materials. If you are looking for something you can use for a low volume project to be completed in a short time only, then magnesium dies are best. These dies are meant to produce only 5 thousand impressions on substrates. They are less durable and are ideal only for stocks that are smooth enough.

Copper dies are more expensive than magnesium dies. However, they are more durable as they can be used for a hundred thousand impressions. The strongest of the three though are brass dies. They can be used for 1 million impressions and produce far better image produce compared to copper dies.

Thus, your choice of the material will depend on how much you need it. You might also want to take into consideration the types of embossing available. Your options include blind emboss, registered emboss, combination emboss, pastelling, glazing and scorching. Be sure the right preparations are done for the process to be successful.

Foil embossing is used for various applications such as company logos, accents surrounding logos, graphics and document security. If you are unwilling to invest on the materials for the process, you may also get commercial services instead. Surely, spending for the process will just be worth it if it helps in promoting your brand and services.
