The Mystique Behind Girl Up Conference

By Celia Hall

Most males are interested in girls and the term girl up conference is likely to instigate an Internet search. This may end in confusion as a number of different sites come up. Some have the definite article 'the' before them. Others have 'a', suggesting that there is only one such conference. Before retreating in confusion the searcher might pick up the fact that there is a link between the term and the United Nations Organization.

Among the writings that appear are assumptions that readers will all be American. However, references to an international organization seem to contradict this assumption. This leads the searcher to wonder whether the phrase refers to a general movement or to a single event taking place in the USA. Being a global forum the Internet can be quite a confusing place when blog make assumptions that all readers are members of one nationality or partisan group.

The phrase 'girl up conference' consists of two nouns separated by the preposition 'up'. The first noun, 'girl' does produce the certainty that the phrase is to do with young female persons, or perhaps one such person. However, when searched sites depict people who are decidedly no longer girls confusion again bubbles up in a searcher's mind. Possibly, women may refer to themselves as girls in fond remembrance of what they once were. Alternatively they might use the word in a militant sense that is intended to imply gender solidarity.

By nature the United Nations Organization is a confused entity. Daily media reports illustrate that nations across the Globe are involved in rivalry, war and dissension. They are seldom united in anything. Even some people in states within the United States wish to seceded from the Union. However, the UN is an organization which assumes unity. This is much more a hope than a fact. The reputation of the body as one that fails consistently to settle disputes is very well established in history. Among the many unsettled questions are those on gender issues.

The Feminist Movement has enjoyed unqualified success in some parts of the world where equal opportunities for men and women exist. The fact that equal opportunities are not always grasped, or that equality is not quite as palatable as some thought it would be does not belie the fact that it is now entrenched in law and social custom. However, in very large areas of the world population females chafe under the restrictions that society places on them by virtue of their gender

The question arises whether the interests of downtrodden women are best served by them banding together as females or by a general consensus of both males and females. Throughout history there are cases of women who have succeeded on their own merits without resorting in any way to the support of feminist movements.

Some have openly used femininity to their advantage and others not. In most cases success is dependent upon the cooperation of both genders. This is demonstrated in the lives of famous female rulers such as the Empress Cixi of China

The title 'girl up conference' tends to imply a gender specific context. Boys may not feel welcome unless they are effeminate. The disadvantage of this is that the conference will be about issues that concern roughly one half of the population. An advantage might be that delegates will gain confidence from banding together with others who see things in the same light.
