Black people everywhere have heard about African American spirituals since they are a part of their culture. The hymns give a feeling of hope to many individuals when they are feeling depressed about life and the things that are happening around them. People who grew up decades ago have always held strong to these songs which were very important to them.
Youngsters living in the United States are now being taught these great songs which helped their ancestors make it through rough times in history. A variety of artists have performed these classics and the younger crowd is remaking them. Elder Walter, Paul Robeson, Howard Roberts, Mahalia Jackson and the Fisk Jubilee Singers have all done brilliant versions of these songs.
Some of the most notable ones are "Amazing Grace", "Go Down Moses", "Pharaoh's Army Got Drowned", "Soon I Will Be Done", "Take My Hand Precious Lord" and "Swing Low Swing Chariot". These are great hits that have a special meaning to the people who wrote them and the artist who sing them. They also play a great part in religion for many black individuals.
The song "Amazing Grace" will inspire someone to make their life better. It reminds people of color that they need to always stay positive and remember that God will carry them through the struggles of life. People know that bad times will always be there but if you keep faith things will change.
A certain film named the Ten Commandments introduced many people to the Pharaoh and his evil men who were out to destroy the Hebrews. Moses was given great power by God and he used it to bring down the army with water. This is reflected in the song "Pharaoh's Army Got Drowned." Blacks who were sold into slavery in the United States faced the same crisis as the Hebrews.
The song "Soon I Will Be Done" is simply stating that life is a temporary circumstance and people should not take the things on earth so literal. It is also stating that the soul will return to heaven after death has happened. People are also reminded to correct their evil ways before they stand in judgement before God.
"Take My Hand Precious Lord" is a song that is begging God to give someone the courage to continue life. They are asking him to carry them through the rough patches that never seem to go away. Slaves would often sing this song while working in the fields and this helped them to withstand the heat and exhaustion that was always present.
