How To Make Your Round Face Appear More Oval

By Alex Greenwood

What face shape do you have? Is it long, square or maybe round? Whatever it is, you probably want something different! For some reason it seems to be in our nature to want what we don't have. Thankfully cosmetics were invented. They can pretty much change the look of any face when you know the tricks to use. We'll explore how to make the round face look longer and thinner today.

If you have wide, chubby cheeks and a short face from the brow down, that's considered a round face. There's nothing wrong with round faces, Cameron Diaz has one and I don't think anyone could accuse her of not looking good! Maybe that's because she focuses on four major areas that make her face appear longer and not as wide.

Start with your foundation. With this base you can create the illusion of contours that you don't possess naturally. With a lighter colour apply a strip down your nose and on the tip. Then take a darker colour and blend out from your nose, above the cheeks. It's essential that the two colour blend flawlessly to make it look natural.

Next we'll create new contours with power and blush. With a soft brush, use a translucent powder, working from the bottom up and out towards your hairline. This technique will help make your face appear longer. When finished that, apply blush just under your cheekbones. Make the look natural, don't apply too much or make it stand out, you don't want to look like a clown!

Changing your eyes and eyebrows can dramatically change the look of a round face, making it look more oval. Because we want to give the impression of long rather than wide, we'll think of our face as we would with a clothing pattern. We all know that vertical stripes make you look taller and horizontal stripes can make you look wider. So we want our eye area to appear to be lifting up instead of branching out. Work on giving yourself arched eyebrows. If you put a light colour of eye shadow directly under the center of your eyebrow, it will give the illusion of a lifted eyebrow.

When you apply your eye shadow, start low from the inside, sweeping up and going just past the eye edge giving a "cat eye" look. Accentuate the look with eyeliner applied in the same fashion. Next, with mascara work the outer edges of your eyes again by giving that area a couple of extra strokes.

Not only does this method of make-up application work for our everyday look when trying to alter the look of a round face, it works really well for anyone who is being photographed. They say the camera adds 10 pounds, well here is a technique to make sure your face doesn't show it! But the most important thing is to make your look seem natural with proper blending techniques.
