Self Defense - What it Really Is And What Types Are There

By Jacob Foster

The general public in the world today would probably think of self-defense as giving their assailant a quick karate kick to the groin. A person may perhaps even deliver a striking jab in the eyes. But the truth is, for the ones who have ever taken any martial arts classes, self-defense really means to do anything you can to avoid a fight. You should use your intelligence and not your fists.

Nonetheless, when you talk about self-defense in legal conditions, it can be deemed as justified force that is used by a person to defend his own life or the life of someone else. Whenever a defendant shows up in court on felony charges regarding force such as manslaughter, assault or murder, he commonly uses self-defense as his justified reason for such a deed.

Forms of Self-defense

Martial Arts

Self-defense is used synonymous with the term martial arts. It was first taught and practiced for battle. In these days, the practice of martial arts is typically used as methods for self-defense, sports, strengthening the confidence of a person, fitness exercising and mental growth. There are various different methods of self-defense that are taught today such as karate, judo, tae kwan do, to simply name a few.

Use Your Head

Those who are threatened and decide to fight back in "self-defense" risk the scenario going from bad to worse. The assailant, who is most likely on edge and has his adrenaline in motion, could become angrier and a lot more aggressive. Are you aware of what you should do in this predicament? Escape - run! It will be easier to avoid injury.

If you feel an imminent attack, you should trust your intuition before it takes place. Your intuition, along with common sense, can help keep you out of trouble.

Physical Self-Defense

If a person's physical qualities are overpowering, then its likely simpler to avoid a situation that will involve utilizing self-defense. Nevertheless, if you happen to be smaller compared to the normal person, chances are you were picked on by a bully. The only real nice thing about this is that the smaller sized individual usually has greater capacities of mental self-defense.

Mental Self-Defense

When talking about the mental element of self-defense, it is the avoidance and understanding of certain situations, locations and everyday people. The person who has been picked on nearly all of his life is more conscious of how to circumvent a bad situation because he has acquired it from past experiences.

Arming Women Against Rape Endangerment

Each woman should prepare for herself a personal protection method that is based on her needs and lifestyle. For many women, that means only carrying a can of pepper spray or having a Persuader keychain that will be able to be used for self-defense. Many other women feel they need to carry a firearm and have one in their home as well.

AWARE is an organization that encourages self-protection along a continuing force since different types of defense will be needed for different threat levels. The primary responsibility a woman really should have is to try avoiding the danger by being alert and prepared. If a situation arises, she should try to depart, or at least keep it from escalating if at all possible. If these two methods fail, or if there is an impending immediate threat, then the woman's responses should be of a higher level.

Avoidance

The main emphasis of self-defense is always to avoid a potentially harmful situation. Assailants are commonly tougher, bigger, may be equipped and sometimes may have an accomplice. If you are dealing with an assailant, you will likely not be successful in overpowering him. However, an aggressor, to be able to mount an attack, has to keep three elements present: desire, distance and decision. If you are able to eliminate any one of those elements, an attack can be foiled without needing to resort to physical self-defense. Any time you cannot avoid a situation, then fight to get away.

Hopefully, you have learned the true meaning of self-defense and why it is not the cowardly thing, to avoid a fight at all costs.
