Health care advocates help lower income adults

By Pau Sterp

For the first time in American history the average age of a homeless person has moved from the age range of 55-64 to age 48-68, more and more people in this country are becoming homeless due to the lack of jobs, and at a younger age. The crushing economy, higher medical bills, and the ever growing cost of living have taken their toll on people of all ages and gender.

It is often thought that a homeless person is someone seen on the streets with all their belongings, which can be the case however a homeless person is often people like you who work hard, and one day get laid off from their place of employment, have some bad luck and can't find work for a longer period of time than expected and then this person might not be able to keep up with their rent and find themselves on the streets. More often than not shelters are filled to capacity with families who have lost their home- this cause and effect of homelessness abounds in urban communities where tens of thousands of people are literally homeless, unfortunately many who are homeless in rural areas don't have access to shelters and as a result are on the streets.

Medicaid is also available for seniors however this program is needs-based, meaning that rather than a social insurance its eligibility is determined largely by a person's limited income and financial resources. Medicaid covers a wider range of health care services than Medicare but the requirements for enrollment are more confined, however many people with Medicare who have low incomes, but not quite low enough to qualify for Medicaid can qualify for several MSPS available to help lower income older adults and disabled individuals pay for some of their out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Altegra Health helps Medicare members identify and apply for State Medicare Savings Programs that can help pay their Medicare Parts A and B premiums, coinsurance, and deductibles. It may also pay some of the member's health plan co-payments. With Altegra's interview process with a Medicare Advantage member and the guidelines established by the Social Security administration (SSA), if the member would like help they may also qualify for the "Extra Help" benefit, (also known as Limited Income Subsidy, or LIS) under Medicare Part. D.

Health care clients also love Altegra's Wellness Continuity Management solutions which enables health plans to gain a deeper understanding of the health of their members and provider networks in order to bring together the right benefits, the right care, and the right reimbursement. They achieve this through a comprehensive and integrated approach to member engagement, quality reporting, and risk adjustment programs.

Whatever the reasons are, seniors are finding themselves in real financial turmoil and the situation continues to get worse year after the year, this trend needs to stop. Friends, family, individuals all need to have the courage to step in and make strong choices before finances are spiraling out of control and the loss of home and financial independence are taken away.
