You Can Easily Reinvent Your Life

By Leslie Mitchell

In recent times, self help books and guides have become very popular. Some people might see them as hokey or as somewhat of a gimmick, but many of those who have tried them report high satisfaction and have seen great results from following some of the guidelines set forth. There is a series of books to help or identify nearly every issue, problem, or cause for stress that a person can suffer from, so you may reinvent your life.

One such book is called Reinventing Your Life and is well known and liked for being straightforward and providing helpful approaches to some major issues. The text was developed and written by two highly respected psychologists with PhDs, Jeffery Young and Janet Klosko. Detailed in the book are 11 different common hassles or concerns that people face as well as advice and insight on how to take steps to overcoming them.

With each of the 11 common situations that are gone over in the book, the authors lay out a plan for evaluating why that is present in the person's daily routine, why they should change it, and how they can go about taking steps toward changing it. These 11 common traps or emotional patterns are referred to as lifetraps or schemas in the text. The traps and situations are nearly universal among humans, with some people suffering from many of them all at once.

The text details the eleven lifetraps that people face as well as how they can help themselves overcome them. These patterns are varied but include low self esteem and self worth, entering into bad relationships, being dissatisfied with any amount of success, and feeling severe anxiety or paranoia over the possibility of any major problems or catastrophes. The authors write about all these issues.

Bigger emotional issued underlie each of the 11 common lifetraps gone over in the book. People who devote themselves fully to uncovering these things and take steps to change them are those that see the most results from the program. The book provides the insight and tools needed, but the reader has to take that information into their own hands and work to make meaningful changes for them.

In addition to the case histories, the book also provides self-diagnostic tests, detailed descriptions, easily-accessible and understood lists, and meaningful steps to overcoming common traps. Having a negative self-image can have a hugely negative effect on a person. Many simply cannot pull themselves out of these destructive patterns without some guidance and help from people familiar with the issues and trained in how to approach them.

The techniques detailed in the book by Young and Klosko are very well laid out. There are experiential exercise, such as getting in touch with one's inner child. There are also cognitive exercises, such as writing out a list of personal lifetraps and why they are personally destructive; and finally, behavioral exercises, such as clearly identifying the behaviors that must change and taking those steps.

Reinvent your life is quite an easy, but detailed read and has positive feedback from many people. Readers enjoy the compassion and knowledge of the author's and feel comforted by what is said in the text. Not everyone will change their living by reading it, but many see very positive changes and enjoy their successes.
