By Marshal Cardo

As far as sports go, BJJ has taken its place among the most enjoyable ones out there. Basically, it is a martial art; therefore, it is highly combative. Learning this sport can bring all sorts of excitement and fun to those who decide to take it up. An added plus is having the pride of wearing a BJJ GI. There may be times when you find yourself encountering less than desirable characters or people. If you knew BJJ, you will be more able to defend and protect yourself. It is also very handy when dealing with thieves and robbers who make the mistake of breaking into your home. Many people have to venture out into dangerous territories and shady alleys. Knowing the dangers that lurk in these shadowy places, they decide to learn this sport.

You can also try your hand on this art. But you should expect having to face several advantages and disadvantages when you take up this sport ' or any sport, for that matter. There are few health concerns, related to BJJ. It is fun and enjoyable, true; however, you cannot do away with some of the health risks that usually come with it. You need to be aware of this fact, before trying it. This article will help you to understand the simple problems faced by the JJ GI-wearing learner during the practice of BJJ. For example, when you start practicing the sport, you are most likely to experience some skin problems and also cauliflower ear problems.

During a BJJ match, the opponents will be making use of their heads as a mode of attack. If you have already watched this art in television shows or in reality, you will understand that the head gets affected to the greatest extent in BJJ. It is important that you be careful whenever you find yourself having to face an opponent. A little slip or carelessness, and the person wearing the BJJ GI could unluckily be rendered deaf or become hearing impaired. Swelling of the ear and other ear damage is entirely possible. The swollen ear cartilage could become separated away from the perichondrium. You should not ignore the fact that the perichondrium is a very important ear part. It is where the ear cartilage gets its nourishment.

Permanent swelling of this region of the ear is also sometimes possible. The condition becomes quite serious when this happens. This condition is referred to as cauliflower ear formation. It is a permanent deformation, one that will last a lifetime. If you wish to prevent the formation of cauliflower ear, then you can wear a protective gear for the head as part of your BJJ GI. This is actually the best protection you could ever get for your head, or your skull. But that is not all. You will also worry about some health issues on the dermal region.

Muscle strain is also an effect of prolonged performance or practice of BJJ. In fact, it could even lead to strain so severe that not a lot of people could handle it. But it is the skin problems that you should worry about the most. When there is too much of skin to skin contact and rubbing, there will be skin abrasion. When you are not hygienic, your BJJ GI is not laundered properly, and when you use unclean mats for practicing BJJ, this might also lead to problems. Infections such as ringworm, staph, or herpes are also entirely possible, although those are rare occurrences. Do not be carried away by the fun and enjoyment of practicing BJJ. You still have to make sure you understand all the possible health risks involved.
