Make it happy hour with good health

By Marty Werti

Who hasn't overindulged in a meal and paid the price later? Weather it was pizza with breadsticks at the football game, a celebratory double fudge sundae, or a chili dog with cheese fries at the ballpark. We all have had our moments when the food choices we make might sound so delicious that eyes and stomach overrule the mind and heart, where the mind haven been overridden will only after be heard by the nagging guilt hanging in our head as to the amount of calories just consumed that will raise the numbers on any scale compelling us to lose the moment of joy we once felt.

The people who make these foods and yummy treats really do love you and wouldn't in a million years think they are doing you a disservice but if you choose to eat everything that is placed before you are doing your are compromising yourself, and you know better, because you deserve better. So before you offend someone or get angry with yourself for a lapse in judgment make a game plan before the holidays even arrive.

Being hungry is a universal sensation however far too many people are eating all the time and don't really know what a hungry sensation really feels like, they just know it must be time to eat because it's lunch time, or someone one brought doughnuts to work so you must be them. So many have come to accept their obesity discomforts as normal, "People think this is just how my body works," Lizzy, a digestive wellness expert says.

Ok now how to NOT go over board on indulgences; Think pain, think is it worth it, because for everything that goes in your mouth is sure to land somewhere on your body where you are eventually going to have to hit the gym to work off. So I say again, think pain, is the food you are bout to eat worth it. Some foods simply have no nutritional value, take for instance powdered sugar; unless great grannie is going to hold it against you skip those treats laden with sugar. Cheesy pizza you have eaten with the cousins while watching Christmas movies, might be a tradition for as long as your can remember but will you remember the pizza into the night or can you have just one bit and be ok.

Pineapple anytime of year is a delight to the senses, now think of adding it to your holiday feast by follow this simple recipe: cup of honey, 1 cup warm water, 1 ripe pineapple, peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces, 2tbs. minced fresh gingerroot. Dissolve the honey in warm water and blend with pineapple in a blender until smooth. If you want a more tropical taste add a half of a banana while mixing the pineapple in the blender. Add the minced ginger and blend about 30 seconds more. Then pour into a 9x13 inch pan, put into the freezer. Every hour or so stir mixture, this allows the mixture to freeze uniformly, once frozen scoop into airtight storage container and keep in the freezer until ready to serve. This frozen mixture can then be served with a sparkly Champaign, bubbly clear soda, or by itself.

In other words- if you eat processed foods high in fat, it will take your body 5 times longer to work off the fat you've just consumed. Should you crave that pizza, chili dog, or a celebratory ice cream sundae, remember to eat it in moderation, eat slow, drink a lot of liquids, and don't make a habit of it. Look beyond the moment and know you are worthy of eating better so your body will function better for you in the long run.
