By Tamika Powell

Every professional aims at making a development in his or her career. Physician coaching helps individuals to improve their lives and gives them an opportunity to make a significant growth in their career. This engagement is particularly beneficial to the healthcare sector where professionals are faced with numerous challenges on a day to day basis. Failure to address these issues may lead to poor service delivery.

Coaches are commonly known to work athletes and performers such as actors and dancers. The results of their efforts are visible through the excellent performance displayed by these parties. There are also professional coaches who are actively involved in the business world to enable business leaders to devise appropriate solutions and strategies to counter certain scenarios in the course of their operation. This concept has now been adopted by physicians who contract personal coaches who offer guidance to help them improve their personal and professional achievements.

In addition to the clinical skills obtained through medical training, a successful career as a medical practitioner requires several other skills. These include interpersonal and self-management skills. These are aimed at striking a balance between personal life and work. Without these skills, even the best clinical skills are inadequate to provide quality care that meets all the needs of the different patients.

Coaching improves the decision making ability of an individual. This is made possible by being able to develop realistic objectives and defining clear strategies to accomplish them. Outlining these aspects in advance simplifies the decision making process. Effective communication enables medical practitioners to associate with their clients in a manner that allows them to obtain the information needed in their work.

The coaching process helps to achieve high levels of organisation by eliminating disorderly behaviour and inappropriate actions. In most cases, employees tend to be overwhelmed by difficult situations causing them to engage in unnecessary activities that are costly to the business. Those with proper coaching and training have the appropriate leadership attributes, success ideologies, interpersonal skills and self-management skills to handle these situations.

The relationship developed through partnering with the coach helps to reduce and prevent conflicts. Individuals without a clear state of mind tend to engage in activities that lower their morale which have a negative impact on the overall performance of the business. However, those who have undergone effective training and coaching demonstrate significant motivation and productivity required to achieve success. The nurturing of relationships helps them to effectively deal with the patients.

It helps to improve the self-awareness of the employee. The entire experience allows them to reflect on their weaknesses, ambitions, strengths, beliefs, behavioural patterns and their values in life. This helps them to identify the areas in their life where they need to make improvements. Working on the weak areas and improving on their strengths greatly improves their performance.

Physician coaching mainly focuses on building the potential of employees to enable them achieve their career objectives in a short time. The coach possesses the necessary skills and usually has adequate experience in the field. They are usually physicians trained to guide others on how to maximise their potential.
