Your Personal Path

By Michael Bloxton

"Where do I start?" Great question and one to which there is no "one size fits all" answer. We have a process we use to coach people through discovering what will work for them. We are going to take you through that process!

There are 5 major areas in life that we can improve upon:

1. Health and Wellness

2. Finances

3. Relationships

4. Business / Career

5. Spirituality

First, take a piece of paper and write down the area of life that is most important to you. Below that, write the area that is the next most important and continue this list until you have listed all 5 areas in their order of importance - to you. Give this some thought and make sure you have the list correct before moving forward.

Each of these areas gets a ranking for their level of "possibility" in your life. 1 is the lowest level, and 20 is the highest. If you have a phenomenal career, rank it somewhere between 15 and 20. But if your relationships are not where you want them to be, rank that category in the single digits.

At this point, your rankings tell you something interesting. While you may think certain areas of your life are more important than others, the rankings tell you which you are taking action on most frequently. If you named spirituality as your lowest importance area, yet it has the highest rank, you now know that your daily actions are focused more on this area than the areas where say you want more.

What steps can you take to align your activities with your desires? Why the disconnect?

12-Step Recovery Programs ask that you take a fearless inventory. This is a great place to do that. Be honest, and don't give into a temptation to inflate the ranking of any individual area. Don't be lured by the feeling of significance. The simple fact that you are engaged in this exercise demonstrates the significance you are placing on your own life.

Looking at your list and rankings, one will strike you as most important to improve on. Which area, were you to improve it, would have the largest impact on your overall happiness? Which area, if worked on, would spill over into other areas of your life the most? How would improving this area of your life make you feel more significant, more connected with others, more certain, provide the most variety, and allow you to contribute to those you love?

Now that you are aware of what you need to work on, there is one final step. Discover what you must learn, take action on, and implement in your life to make these changes... the actual actions you will take to accomplish your goal. To speed up the process, look around for someone who has already attained the results you desire in their life and model their actions. This can be someone in your life already, an author, a coach, or anyone else who has achieved the results you want. Model their success.

Don't worry if you do not know how it will all turn out. Remember, only when you have gone as far as you can see, will you be able to see further. Most people get caught up in not getting instant results or reaching their goal instantly. The truth lies in the journey, not the destination. As we learn more we are empowered. As we gain knowledge we have more resources to make better decisions. As we take one step another step reveals itself to us. Find exactly where you are and begin at once to identify what you want to create and take the first step in THAT direction.
