Your Past Does Not Ever Control Your Future

By Andrew Wilkin

Listened to a radio advert or read one in a paper for some investment fund, they mostly have that small section to claim, 'past performance doesn't guarantee future performance'.

Isn't it curious that we straight away presume that this is to cover the negative scenario that the fund starts losing money, it is obvious that they could also do much better than formerly naturally this is less likely with funds that over inflated their previous performance.

What has this got to do with you? Well the same is true for you, me and the rest of the globe, but with a twist.

Most people at some specific point in their life look backwards at things from their past and consider things they failed at, or that they weren't good at, and realize that this means they cannot do it and will not.

Sure this might be the case for flying unaided, or running quicker than Usain Bolt but for the more practical things in life this is simply wrong. Taking a few examples of not doing well at something as proof that you are no good at it is insanity we'd all still be crawling if that were correct.

All skills learned have to a point a factor of trial, error and learning or there would be little need for faculties or the education system, which seek to teach not only abilities but methods for learning.

OK, so let's imagine you buy into the principle that we learn from our mistakes, and that it is not our mistakes that characterise us, rather our learning from them. Did you know all the beliefs in yourself, about others and the world, that you are living your life from every day?

The shocking thing is that we are neither conscious of all the beliefs we walk around with that were formed from past disasters, that are at present dictating our experience of the planet. What's worse they may have served us during the past, but we seldom question them or are even mindful of them.

Take as an example that you were told by your ma and pa, 'don't talk to strangers ', drummed into you frequently in your formative years. It is clear that you may well be carrying about with you the idea that strangers are somehow dangerous. Imagine the impact that would have on somebody's life...

Be open to the chance that life set backs, mistakes and mess ups during the past, are in some way a learning experience to help you succeed. Because unlike a money fund you can learn from your mistakes, it is up to you what you do with that learning.
