Home Security: Tips To Choosing A Surveillance Camera

By Mike T Cruise

Surveillance cameras are becoming a popular choice in home security. They are the only device available that gives you the ability to literally always keep an eye on your home, office, or car when you are away.

There are two main choices in surveillance cameras. You can buy a wireless camera which is increasingly popular, or you can buy a wired camera which is an old favorite with a reliable track record. Both have many makes and capabilities.

Wireless cameras are popular because there is more flexibility in where you can place them and because they are a little more clandestine. Wired cameras are a bit more difficult to install and can have unattractive stray wires that hang around them. Wired cameras are however known to be reliable and consistently produce high quality imaging. Since the signal for wireless cameras travels through the air instead of wires it is more susceptible to interference and interception. Other wireless devices, such as baby monitors or the internet, can actually interfere with the wireless signal, and since the wireless signal can be intercepted you should ask the manufacturer if they encrypt their systems.

Once you have decided on either a wired or wireless camera you can move on to deciding what capabilities you want your camera to have. There are small hidden cameras which you can hide in just about any object in a room. There are also night vision cameras and motion sensor cameras. Night vision cameras use infrared emissions to produce thermal imaging. Motion sensor cameras are cool because they can be set up to start recording when they sense motion in a room.

If you are thinking about investing in a surveillance camera, you should also consider whether you will need the following: weatherproofing if your camera will be placed outside; a wide angle lens to capture more area in a room or yard; remote access to view live feed of your home at anytime from any place in the world; and security firm monitoring if you would like to have security authorities monitor your surveillance system.
