The way in which you take in info is exceedingly important. You must be able to distinguish the information that is useful to you from the information that isnt. You dont want to be pointlessly spending time on taking in info that you wont be using and that's of no signification to you.

After taking in the information, you want to incorporate it into your knowledge base. You want to make meaning of the info you've gone and taken in. You need a way for it to all make sense to you so you know what youre going to do with it and where you are going to use it.

Revising the information on a constant basis is what takes it to your long term memory and keeps it there.
