How to Keep Your Child Safe from Swimming Pools

By Jane Claire

Statistics show that drowning is the number two cause of deaths for kids who are age five and under and most of these accidents happen in residential swimming pools. Because of the deadly risks of having a pool, those with children in their homes should always take extra precautionary measures.

One of the most widely used methods to prevent this kind of accident is with swimming pool alarms. These alarms are manufactured to set off loud alarming sounds whenever a child trips over the pool. During recent times, these devices were a lot profitable; however, as of today, owners of swimming pools first need to ensure that the device they purchased has qualified for safety standards.

Parents and pool owners can choose from any of these types of swimming pool alarms: floating or surface alarms that detect motion on the water's surface; underwater alarms that detect motion under water surface and it also reduces false alarms due to rain, for instance; and wristband alarms that children can wear and will sound off upon exposure to water.

Among these types of alarms, researches have proven that underwater alarms are the most ideal to use. They are steadier as well as reliable as compared to floating alarms. The wristband alarms created loud alerting sounds yet were set off whenever it was exposed to water. It is ideal to install alarms that have inbound receivers to ensure that the alarm sets off not only on the swimming pool but also inside the home or basically in a 200 feet radius.

Besides these pool alarms, below are some useful precautionary measures to ensure children safety in the swimming pool.

* Make a barrier around the perimeter of your swimming pool. You can build a fence or wall that is at least 4 feet tall and is made with self-latching gates so as to prevent any kids from passing. Furthermore, ensure that the latch is out of sight from kids.

* Establish an accepted automatic pool safety cover that is basically composed of strong polyester or a tarpaulin sheet. It is used to cover the entire pool when it isn't needed to be used. This has the double purpose of keeping your kids away from the pool but also keeps the pool clean. You can also utilize an underwater alarm to go with it.

* Remove and lock away steps or ladders to above-ground pools whenever they are not in use.

* Provide emergency apparatus as well as phones near the swimming pool. The parent or guardian who is tasked to look after the children should be equipped with skills in CPR.

These pool devices is one of the best methods to ensure that your child is safe from being drowned; however, parents of the children should not mainly depend on these devices and instead practice extra precautionary measures such as the ones we've discussed earlier. Furthermore, close parent guidance is another extra measure parents can take in order to ensure the safety of their children at all times.
