According to experts, sleeping is a way of relaxing the nerves and the mind. In fact, any form of sleep is essential for survival; not only to humans, but to animals as well. Sleep is so important that people of different age ranges are required of a certain amount of sleep in order to become healthy and fit. For most people, sleeping seems like a second skin. Whenever these people get a chance to catch a wink or two, they grab it. However, there are some people who are not able to sleep naturally at all. Moreover, there are also some who have difficulty in sleeping. These conditions are certainly not to be shrugged off the shoulders; but rather given attention to.

There are many solutions to sleeping problems. Some of these include medication and drugs. While regular intake of drugs for sleeping is not actually healthy most especially for prolonged use, many people still prefer this remedy.One of the reasons that have been identified which contributes to difficulty in sleeping is the inability of the person to relax. Relaxing one's self is basically the first step toward sleeping; thus if a person is unable to relax himself, it becomes difficult for that person to sleep. This is probably one of the reasons why sound machines are invented.

The White Type of Noise.Yes, noise is one of the leading factors of insomnia. Unwanted noise can disrupt your sleep and may mean one restless night for you. However, studies have shown that a certain noise type is actually a way of curing your insomnia naturally with sound. This is none other than white noise. This is a type of sound that merges the differing frequency sounds that a human ear can well, hear. Simply put, it is a random sound in the background that you usually don't pay that much attention to. These noises can prevent your brain from resisting sleep and stimulate your state of slumber to dominate. Examples include the whirring of your fan, rain drops on your roof, the hum of a waterfall, among others. Several companies have manufactured machines to imitate these sounds and act as sleep machines. If this option is more expensive than you can manage, you could always try out audio cassettes, CDs, or MP3s that will do just the trick. Some sleep generating sound clips are easily available online for your trial.

Aside from solving sleeping problems, sound machines are also used by lawyers, therapists, physicians, and other professionals who require privacy and confidentiality in their operations. Sound machines act as sound proofing devices thus promoting privacy and confidentiality in a space or room.Today, there are many sound machines that are available in the market. The term "sound machines" is a general term that refers to a class of appliances that include white noise machines, sleep machines, noise makers and white sound generators among many other permutations of these words. These devices are usually employed to block out or mask annoying sounds in our environment such as that created by neighbors arguing or playing their TV at too high a volume or just the general bustle of activity in a city that can create distracting noises. This noise in your environment can sometimes be blocked out by using a sound machine to overwhelm the offending noise with a more pleasant white noise sound of your own choosing. The white noise sound generated these machines usually consists of all sound frequencies occurring at the same time. This white noise will sound kind of like wind, rain, ocean or a mechanical sound like that produced by a motor or fan. The effect of this jumble of sound waves is that some sound waves get canceled and others get obscured, making the offending sound indistinct and therefore less obtrusive.

Generate white noise: A "white noise machine" could be as simple as a fan or air conditioner. Those who do not like to have air blowing through the room may prefer an actual sound machine device. There are many on the market; some play steady low sounds that mask other sounds in the environment. Other electronic sound machines on the market play loops of relaxing nature sounds: ocean waves, rain forest sounds, or waterfalls. The right solution for you may depend on how many people you share your living space with. Students with sleep problems often report that masking sounds are more helpful (because of the many people and noises around them) than continuous nature sounds. Many sound machines offer both, so it's easy to experiment and find the right type of white noise for your situation.Keep a supply of ear plugs. Nothing fancy here. Every drugstore carries at least a couple different types of earplugs. The moldable wax variety is comfortable for most people.Invest in a satin sleep mask: Yes, you'll look like a movie diva, and you might have to put up with a little teasing. But sleep masks are great for blocking out light and giving you perfect darkness.Install blackout curtains in your bedroom.

Avoid the following: alcohol, nicotine, caffeine close to bedtime.If you experience joint pain due to inflammation, try taking aspirin with water an hour before bedtime.Herbal supplements such as Valerian Root and Ginseng have mild sedative properties.Avoid sleeping tablets - these are often addictive and natural sleep methods are much more effective in the long term.Note that people have different sleep requirements depending on their age.Babies up to two months old need between 16 - 18 hours of sleep each day.Babies four months to one year old need around 10 hours of sleep each night, plus two long naps and one short nap during the day.Children one to five years of age usually need eleven hours of sleep each night plus three hours of short and long naps.Children between 5 - 15 years of age need 9 - 10 hours of sleep each night.Adolescents need about 10 hours sleep each night.Adults average about 8 hours sleep each night (but this varies between 4 - 10 hours).I personally have found the simplest and most effective method of getting to sleep is having natural sleep sounds playing softly in the background through my mp3 player. (My favourite is gently breaking waves on the beach).Remember that sleep is not a luxury. It is something that the body needs regularly to maintain itself in good health. Do not neglect it.
